Well aside from the World Cup good news, I have some more: another 404 C has been identified by serial number in Germany: 4594128, a blue Cabriolet in the Hessen Province. This brings the registry up to 1425 cars!

Good news for the 404 C registry though: Mr. Swanepoel of Zuid-Afrika tells me that he has discovered a new 404 C for the list: 4670898, a red Cabriolet seen below!

A Coupé has been discovered in NEw Zealand: Nr. 4595379.

This car was an "official" right hand drive conversion done by the British Peugeot importer in 1965/66.

This car was sold when new in South Vietnam, was later exported to South Africa and now is in Australia. Chassis number 4499106, it is the 1429th car in our 404 C census!

For sale in Germany right now, a 1966 404 Cabriolet that was sold when new in the USA (hence it has an MPH speedometer and red rear turn indicator lenses), number 4499148. If anyone is interested in buying this car, I have the contact information for the seller. Total: 1430 cars!

One month after the last "discovered" 404 C, I have found one in Ljubljana:

6803202, a Cabriolet .....which is green......., but originally silver metallic, I think.

It was evidently from France, and still carries the number plate: 3765 QE 03.

I found an owner in Greece who is selling his car, and he agreed to add it to the registry! Nice guy. The car is a 1968 model, Arosa white, black interior, serial number 6802079. This brings the total up to 1432 cars.

An owner of a 404 Coupé in Venezuela (!!) sent his car's details to the 404 registry website:

4670988, Carrosserie No. 17250, with the Nardi floor shifter and the Jaeger rally instrument panel! Sorry, I didn't get a photo.

There is a bit of truth in that, because the number of 404 C/C models that were made according to Peugeot is 17.223, and the production records show that the Carrosserie Number of the last car should be 17.225.

Well, this latest car from Venezuela has the Carrosserie Peugeot number of 17.250, so it is already 25 higher than we are told by Peugeot that it "should" be. In the database, there are 3 other cars like this, with the Carroserie numbers: 17.231, 17.239 and 17.256. All of these cars are of the very late style Carbureted engine (serial number 467****).

So yes, you are really correct in one way!

Thanks to a contact in Spain, another 404 Cabriolet has been identified in Spain:

4495303, a white Cabriolet, originally Bleu Ciel, the body seems quite OK, but the engine is not functioning. It is for sale in Madrid right now for about 8800 Euros. Note the berline grille behind the 404 C grille frame!

I think, cars used for tests, crashtest etc., had a chassisnumber, but never where sold and registred, and schredded afterwords.
I think, 17.223 are sold, more are build.
In later years they used real prototypes without chassisnumber, and they allways needed to be schredded.
Some ( about 10 pieces ) "1007"-prototypes even had a special chassisnumber, and where 100% complete cars, even showed in Holland
in "Peugeot Experience" in Breukelen. These cars where never allowed for road-usage, and schredded later on....

This morning I received two emails that told me about 4 new cars for the registry!

In Massachusetts USA, a Cabriolet that was bought in Burgundy in France way back in 1986 and exported to the USA: No. 6800940



In Switzerland, a white Coupé in excellent original condition: No. 4598393


And in Germany, two scrapped 404 C cars: Nos. 4670595 and 6801622




Total: 1438 404 C cars accounted for , of which 22 have been scrapped .

In Luxembourg, imported from CH: a Cabriolet in Blanc Arosa 1132, ready for its date with a restoration. Chassis No. 4498709

After a hesitation of a few months, I have also added to the list two other 404 Cabriolets:

One is in South Africa, a model from 1967/68, with the incorrect serial number 5307052. Since the car is unique and identifiable, we will add it to the list. Meanwhile I am working with its owner to establish its true number.




The second one also has an incorrect serial number, and is located in a car museum in Salamanca, Spain. It is also from 67/68. Originally from France, it suffered a serious frontal collision around 1970, was re-registered in Spain and the number from a sedan was assigned to it for some reason: 5333341.



And finally, for sale on eBay in Belgium: 4595459, Cabriolet



Total: 1444 cars, of which 27 have been scrapped/crushed.

Thanks to my contact in Spain, he has looked up the numbers related to a 404 Coupé that is for sale in Sevilla:

Serial number: 6801811, note the front turn signals of the Renault 5 Type 1, the R-16? hubcaps, the Renault (?) parking lights in the side of the front fenders/wings, the incorrect headlamp chrome rings.



Total: 1445 cars, of which 27 have been scrapped.
